Plasma diffusion
Collective term for processes involving the refinement of a metal’s surface at elevated temperature by diffusion of nonmetal atoms by means of of a plasma. The most important examples are plasma nitriding, plasma nitocarburising, plasma carburising and plasma carbonitriding. The respective carbide or nitride phases generated on the surface are some µm thick and much harder than the untreated metal. The underlying diffusion layer with a thickness of up to some 100 µm is also harder than the base material.
