Ion
Electrically charged atom or molecule, lacking one or more electrons (positively charged cation) or having gained one or more electrons (negatively charged anion). Cations are generally formed by metals, anions by nonmetals. The high-energy impacts in a plasma lead even to the positive ionisation of nonmetal atoms or molecules (e. g. argon, hydrogen, oxygen).
